WATERCOLOURS. Shining a light on Nature, an invitation to wander through the forest or amble along a beach
Opened by Johnny Prefumo, the Frog Doctor. A large crowd enjoyed the occasion, with Johnny's engaging talk, and the delectable food and wines, hostessed by Sue's friends
ART AS A MEETING POINT. An exhibition of aesthetic natural beauty: educating, entertaining and enlightening, the paintings were a backdrop for a series of free public talks throughout the exhibition.
PROGRAMME:
* "Encounter with the Artist, Sue Kalab" - floor talk
* Rod Smith, Education Officer BirdLife WA. "LBBs - the Little Bush Birds".
The forest gives us much to delight, and much to mystify. Have you ever seen one little brown bird, and listened to its song, thought you had it nailed, and then it's gazumped by another tiny brown bird with a different song? It can become a fast-flitting frustrating buzz, and identifying one from the other becomes nigh impossible. This little cluster of brown birds of similar species, is called "the snowball effect". They gather together at certain times of their day to feed and forage through the forest. There may be a Scarlet Robin, or Grey Fantail too. Rod's informative little seminar simplified the list. Some "Ah-ha moments" were highly possible. He showed us how to use those darn binoculars.
* Dr Mike Bamford, Zoological Consultant and Vice-chair, BirdLife WA. "Location, Location, Location".
Why Australian plants and animals really are different. Mike spoke about understanding the origins of our wildlife, the biogeography of the south-west and why it is a biodiversity hotspot. It sounds a bit technical but Mike made it interesting! Our landscape is outstandingly marvellous, breathtakingly precious and amazingly different and that's why it brings international scientists and enthusiasts.
* "Drawing as Meditation" - Workshop with the Artist
* Plaxy Barratt, Ecologist and WA Shorebirds 2020 Coordinator, BirdLife WA. "Intrepid Travelers and Ancient Mariners".
Plaxy spoke about the birds of the South West that travel each year to the Arctic Circle to nest and return to our region for summer - 20+ species come to Bunbury-Leschenault, and other shorebirds. Her key message was the national Shorebirds 2020 programme. She touched on Ramsar Wetlands, KBAs (Key Biodiversity Areas) and important sites for shorebirds in the South West and internationally, bringing the focus back to the Leschenault Estuary and Collie River. She also spoke about the pelagic seabirds seen by boat just off our shores. Some birds such as albatrosses fly seemingly forever, without touching land. Plaxy brought us the gifts of the birds of the waters.
* Adrian Barrett, Funeral Director. "The Ritual of Goodbye".
How religions and cultures have evolved to farewell their loved ones - acknowledging International Day of Grief on this day. The speaker Adrian Barrett, Funeral Director with 20 years’ experience in the South West of Australia and Toronto, Canada. Adrian is a qualified embalmer and Junior Vice President of the Australian Funeral Directors Association. Presentation by Wm Barrett & Sons.
* Outdoors event with Friends of the River and Shire of Collie. Community planting morning along the banks of the Collie River.
